When to Use Paragraphs | A Step by Step Guide for Year 1-3
Description
This resource helps students develop the important skill of paragraphing in their writing.
It introduces younger students (working at levels 1 and 2 of the curriculum, or years 1-3) to what paragraphs are, why they’re essential, and when to use them. The resource is designed to help students understand and practice organising their sentences into paragraphs.
Since paragraphing can be tricky for students as they begin learning, this resource simplifies the concept to make it easier for them to grasp.
Inside, you’ll find:
- Teaching slides that explain what a paragraph is
- Simple, easy-to-follow paragraph rules
- A mnemonic (inspired by the popular MC Hammer song “STOP – Hammer Time”) to help students remember when to use paragraphs
- A poster that can be displayed or added to student workbooks
- I Do, We Do, and You Do activities that guide students through the paragraphing process using the gradual release model
- The I Do and We Do activities are built into the teaching slides
- Four You Do activity sheets are also included for independent practice
This resource follows the gradual release of responsibility approach (I do, we do, you do):
- In the I Do phase, the teacher demonstrates the process, working through the example pages.
- In the We Do phase, the teacher and students work through text together.
- In the You Do phase, students practice creating paragraphs independently with provided activity sheets.
