Description

This resource focuses on teaching the essential writing skill of paragraphing.

It helps students understand the concept of paragraphs, their purpose, when to use them, and how to structure them effectively. The goal is to guide students in learning, remembering, and practising organising their sentences into clear paragraphs. Additionally, it provides opportunities for students to grasp and practice the structure of writing paragraphs. Teaching slides and activities are also included to support students in using transition words effectively.

In this resource, you will find the following:
  • Slides that explain what a paragraph is.
  • When to Paragraph’ rules
  • I Do, We Do, and You Do – following the gradual release model, students can learn and be guided to create paragraphs independently.
  • Slides that explain the structure of a paragraph (we use an ice cream sundae as a visual of this).
  • Activities to practice forming a paragraph using the correct structure.
  • Slides that explain transition words.
  • Activities to practice identifying and using transition words.

These activities work alongside a range of mnemonics that you can use to teach the structure of a paragraph.

This resource uses the gradual release of responsibility model (I do, we do, you do).
  • The ‘I Do’ section of this resource is designed to be taught by the teacher, working through the exemplar pages and following the process.
  • The ‘We Do’ section provides text opportunities for the teacher and students to work through the process together.
  • The ‘You Do’ sections allow students to create paragraphs independently.
