Description

Save time and feel confident knowing your students are working on follow-up activities that target a variety of reading and fine motor skills. This resource offers follow-up activities for five Ready to Read Phonics Plus Kākano Seed Level readers commonly used in New Zealand schools (with two more on the way!). The activities are designed to engage students, fostering independence and agency—ideal for your reading rotations.

These activities align with many of the New Zealand Literacy Skills Progressions for Reading at the End of Year One. They focus on key skills your students need!

This resource is formatted in A4 and uses British spelling.

In this pack, you’ll receive:

  1. 10 engaging follow-up activities (two per reader): Each activity sheet includes a QR code linking to an audio version of the text, along with picture cues to help students understand their tasks. When The Pin Tin and Wish, Wish, Wish are released (early 2025), we’ll send you their follow-up activities at no additional cost.

The five readers in this resource are:

Kākano 1:

  • Dot to Dot
  • The Pin Tin – NEW

Kākano 2:

  • The Tin Cup
  • Meg Has Fun

Kākano 3:

  • Jam Buns
  • The Big Sing Song
  • Wish, Wish, Wish – NEW

  1. A variety of fun, skill-building activities, including:
    • Creating new words with letter tiles
    • Matching words and pictures
    • Sequencing the story
    • Identifying beginning sounds
    • Exploring word families
    • Word finds
    • Making personal connections

Each reader comes with two activity sheets tailored to the instructional focus of the book. Teachers can choose to assign one or both sheets depending on the lesson’s objectives.

These activities are specifically designed to reinforce the focus sounds taught in each book. QR codes are included so students can listen to the book again, and there are additional decoding and writing practice activities.

With initial guidance and support, these activities are intended to be completed independently, helping students develop skills in following instructions, fine motor control, and task stamina.

Note: To use this resource, you’ll need access to the Ready to Read Phonics Plus Kākano Seed Level readers, which are available in New Zealand schools and can be found here.

Please note that answers are not included.
