Description

Engage your students in an interactive learning experience with our Plant or Compost? game, designed to enhance their decoding and spelling skills with CVC, CCVC, and CVCC words.

This is a game to practice blending sounds into words. After reading the words, students decide if they are real or nonsense (made up). They ‘plant’ the real words in the soil and place the nonsense words in the compost bin.

Use this resource as a reading activity, with your guided reading group, or as a whole class activity to practice decoding and spelling CVC, CCVC, and CVCC words.

This resource contains:
  • Compost bin and soil graphics
  • 24 CVC words (a mix of real and nonsense words)
  • 24 CCVC words (a mix of real and nonsense words)
  • 24 CVCC words (a mix of real and nonsense words)
  • Blank flowers for you to add your own words.

These activities align with the Science of Reading (SoR). This resource is a practical addition to your structured literacy programme. Activities link directly to the Common Core (Grade 3-6) and the New Zealand Literacy Progressions.

CVC, CCVC, CVCC words:
  • CVC words follow the letter sequence of a consonant, vowel, and consonant e.g. pet, dog, cat.
  • CCVC words follow the letter sequence of a consonant-consonant-vowel-consonant e.g. stop, scan.
  • CVCC words follow the letter sequence Consonant-Vowel-Consonant-Consonant e.g. help, call.
