This resource provides follow-up activities for the current Ready to Read Phonics Plus Rākau Tree level readers found in New Zealand schools. An engaging format is used to develop your students’ sense of agency and independence – perfect for your reading rotations.
These activities meet many of the requirements for the New Zealand Literacy Skills Progressions for Reading at the End of Year One. These are skills that your students need!

In this Ready to Read Phonics Plus Rākau Tree pack you will receive:
1. 12 engaging follow-up activities (two per reader):
The five readers included are:
  • Tinā at School
  • On the Forest Floor
  • Tumble and Turn
  • A Colourful World
  • We Belong
  • A Midnight Roam
Please note, if/when more readers are added, we will add them to this resource – up to 10 readers in total).
2. A range of engaging activities including:
  • compound words
  • using and understanding suffixes
  • making text-to-self connections
  • word finds
  • cloze activities
  • syllable counts
Each book in the series has two pages of activities to match the instructional focus. Teachers can choose for students to complete one or both of the sheets, depending on the goal of the lesson.
  • The activities have been created to specifically match the focus sounds taught in each book. There are also QR codes for students to listen to the book again, and decoding and writing practice activities.
  • With initial modelling and scaffolding, these activities are intended to be completed independently to build students’ skills in following instructions, fine motor skills, and stamina to complete a task.
