These activities have been created to specifically support the teaching and learning of the target short vowel sound and letter /z/.

With initial modelling and scaffolding, these activities are intended to be completed independently to build students’ skills in following instructions, fine motor skills and stamina to complete tasks.

This Phonics and Structured Literacy Activities: Focus Sound Z resource includes:

Three practice activities:

  • I Spy: Students look for and circle all words, pictures and letters that start with the target sound.
  • Add the Letter and Draw: Students add the letter z to the words. Students draw a picture of the new word they have created. Some of these words have double z, and although double consonants are not explored until later in the scope and sequence, it is highly suggested to begin exposing students to the double z now, so students can hear and identify the sound.
  • Decode and Draw: Students decode and read each sentence. Students draw a picture that matches each sentence.

One hands-on activity:

  • Playdoh Letter Mats
