These activities have been created to specifically support the teaching and learning of the target short vowel sound and letter /y/.
With initial modelling and scaffolding, these activities are intended to be completed independently to build students’ skills in following instructions, fine motor skills and stamina to complete tasks.
This Phonics and Structured Literacy Activities: Focus Sound Y resource includes:
Three practice activities:
- Decode and Draw: Students decode and read each sentence. Students draw a picture that matches each sentence.
- I Spy: Students look at each picture and decide whether it starts with the target sound. Students circle and count each word that begins with the target sound. Words are yellow, whale, watermelon, yak, wasp, yogurt, yoyo, yap, yam, wheel, yacht, web, yarn (or could be wool), yoga, water, yawn.
- Listen and Write: Students look at each picture. Students circle each sound in the word from the letters provided and write the word. Words are yak, yap, yam and yum.
