These activities have been created to specifically support the teaching and learning of the target short vowel sound and letter /v/.
With initial modelling and scaffolding, these activities are intended to be completed independently to build students’ skills in following instructions, fine motor skills and stamina to complete tasks.
This Phonics and Structured Literacy Activities: Focus Sound V resource includes:
Three practice activities:
- Colour-Sound Match: Students look at pictures and find and colour words that have the /v/ sound. Students count and write how many pictures contain the /v/ sound. Words are volcano, horse, computer, tree, cup, van, vegetable, key, violin, vase, vacuum cleaner, ice cream, video, pencil, sheep, vet.
- Making Words with the Target Sound: Students write the target letter at the start of each word, read the word they have created and draw a picture that matches the word. This activity also targets word-level comprehension.
- Handwriting Practice: Students trace over the letters and words using the target sound.
