This Finding Novel Study is a comprehension, discussion and activity guide to accompany the novel Finding by David Hill. This is an intriguing novel for upper primary to lower secondary because of its themes of courage and change. Finding also gives a point-of-view perspective on events and social change in Aotearoa New Zealand.
This novel is a perfect accompaniment with the new Aotearoa Histories curriculum, in particular, Whakapapa me te whanaungatanga – Culture and identity.
The Finding Novel Study has been split up into sections for the purposes of this resource. Each section varies in size due to the number of pages and the nature of the content. Some sections call for more reflection and discussion than others.
For each section of the novel study, there are:
  • Reading comprehension questions,
  • Discussion questions for oral language development in the classroom, designed to be used with pairs or small groups of students
  • Weblinks and QR codes for students to find out more about the content discussed
  • Six to eight creative activity choices (including digital and non-digital options)

  • The stories of groups of people from different periods in our history convey their reasons for and experiences of migration. These stories have shaped their culture and identity in Aotearoa New Zealand.
  • What stories do different groups of people tell about their experiences of migration? When did they come, who did they come with, and why did they come? How did these stories shape who they are now?
