We’ve put together a set of reading response activities for the New Zealand School Journal Story Library book Explorers of the Sunrise. Our Explorers of the Sunrise Activities and Lesson Plans pack has everything you need to dive into the articles within this publication. Both a paper-based and digital option are included so you can use this in the way that suits you best – great for distance learning.
 
The Explorers of the Sunrise texts that we have featured are:

  • The Polynesians (article)
These Level 4 texts have contexts and concepts linking to level 4 of the curriculum but a reading year level of year 5–6.
In this resource pack, you receive:

2. 2 x Follow Up Activity Sheets
A one-page activity sheet is provided for each story or article covered in this resource.
Each activity sheet contains a range of reading comprehension strategies including:
  • Use prior knowledge
  • Find information
  • Use vocabulary
  • Make connections
  • Summarise
  • Explore Concepts
These one-page activity sheets also include links to further activities and ideas. The links help students to explore the topic of the article further. QR codes and web links are provided so students can visit websites, listen to audio clips, and watch video clips.
 
Each activity sheet also features a design/create challenge. This encourages students to use higher-order thinking to synthesise their knowledge and create something new.
 
3. Paper-based and digital activities are provided
This activity is provided in both paper-based and digital form (Google Slides).
